Bird Feeding Basics
The top 3 ways to attract wild bird are by supplying any or all of the following seeds:
- Black Oil Sunflower Seed (This is the preferred seed for many small feeder birds, especially in the north. Sunflower seeds will attract jays, red-bellied woodpeckers, finches, goldfinches, northern cardinals, evening grosbeaks, pine grosbeaks, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and grackles).
- Nyjer Thistle Seed (This is the preferred seed for American goldfinches, lesser goldfinches, house finches, and common redpolls.
- Wild Bird Seed Mixtures, Containing Black Oil Sunflower, Fruits, and/or Nuts (Wild bird seed mixtures will appeal to many different wild bird species. Fruit and nuts are additional attractants that birds will love).
